AI: Reduce Hiring Bias?

I don’t know about anyone else but whenever I think of AI, the only thing I can think of is Terminator like robots and cyborgs and while I know that’s unrealistic it seems so weird to think of technology that can do similar things to humans despite the fact that we use AI in our everyday lives. From using Siri or Alexa, our search results, or even our dating profiles (which I don’t have), AI is a very prevalent force in our lives. Over the past 4 years the use of AI has actually grown by 270% and I think it’s becoming something we’re becoming more heavily reliant on because it reduces the margin of error and utilizes historical data and uses it to compare and adapt it to modern day situations. But AI could be applied in a way we haven’t heard much about but could still have just as a profound impact.

In this article from the WSJ about AI being advertised to be able to reduce hiring bias it actually doesn’t come as a huge surprise to me. With a massive labor shortage, an increasing reliance on technology, and more concentration and focus on diversifying the workforce I think this move to use AI help with hiring is a step in the right direction. AI could take away the components in the back of a person’s mind that take away already existing biases that might be in the back of the interviewer’s mind. In addition I think that this related back to some of my earlier findings of how Generation Z is more in touch with the importance of diversity and equity especially within workplaces. So AI could be the futures for many women not only in STEM but also for women in business and people of color as well.
